It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Depression

The holidays are at fortissimo blare, and for a lot of people, that means their depression is off the hook. For lawyers, who suffer from depression three times as often as the general population, it frequently is not the most wonderful time of the year.

But depression is the elephant in the room in law firms and much of law practice. People ignore it and hope it goes away, or they shut their eyes, ears and minds to the symptoms of it. That’s why I was really glad to hear about a new documentary from Daniel Lukasik, who founded LawyersWithDepression.com. You can watch the trailer for A Terrible Melancholy here.

Lukasik runs his website and blog purely to help other lawyers who struggle with the demon of depression. He started the website 3 years ago, as part of his own way of dealing with depression. Both the website and blog have great archives, and I highly recommend perusing them.

If you know you’ve got depression and aren’t really dealing with it, hopefully Dan’s work will inspire you to get some help. Thinking that there is no help for you is the depression talking, not reality. If you can’t bear to make calls yourself, enlist the help of a spouse, loved one, or friend. They’ve been watching you struggle and they want to help, I promise.

If you suspect you have depression, now is a good time to start getting a handle on it. I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions because they tend to be short-sighted, but getting help for possible depression is a worthy effort with tons of payback. Your life, and the lives of everyone around you, will be the better for tackling depression. Do it for yourself, your family, and friends.

And if you’re not depressed, hurray! Maybe you can be the one who helps makes some of those crucial calls.
